01
Distinguish the edition from an introductory account
The Tsinghua page presents an edited account by Li Xueqin of Shifa, Biegua and Suanbiao, identified as an excerpt from a launch talk. It supplies names and research questions; formal references to plates, slip numbers and transcriptions still require the edition.
Identify whether you are using the webpage, the edition, a plate or a later paper. Retain authorship and publication context for each note instead of turning a research presentation into an unattributed final conclusion.
02
Place observation beside interpretation
The account discusses differing Kan and Li positions when comparing Shifa's diagram with Shuogua and leaves questions open. This suggests a reading method: record each diagram's positions before discussing what the difference might mean.
A comparison should name the diagram, edition, page or plate, viewing direction, sign positions and interpreter. Record rotations, reflections or numerical classifications as explicit operations so the reader can trace changes to the original arrangement.
03
Derive two questions from one difference
Ask first whether the difference is visible in the plate and transcription. Then ask what evidence would distinguish copying, orientation, procedural variation or differing traditions. If you have only the introductory prose, make plate verification your next task.
Produce a one-page comparison with two interpretations and the evidence each still lacks. Preserve the material's own labels and leave gaps open instead of filling them with a familiar later sequence or procedure.
REFLECTION
Reflect on the evidence
When a position differs from a familiar diagram, should you correct it immediately or document the difference and edition?
Read the analysis
Document the difference, edition, orientation and location first. A claim of scribal error needs its own argument; familiarity alone does not decide which arrangement is reliable.
